Tugger’s family started with the same intention many dog owners have: enroll in a standard obedience class and teach good manners early.
Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan.
Because of scheduling conflicts, Tugger missed early obedience training during a critical stage of development. By the time he entered a traditional training class, his behavior had already escalated beyond what his owner could physically manage.
The experience was overwhelming.
Tugger was energetic, powerful, and completely out of control. His owner described being brought to tears during nearly every training session, feeling physically unable to manage him despite trying to do everything the “right” way.
An attempt to help burn off his energy only made matters worse.
Following advice from an instructor, the family introduced an exercise attachment that allowed Tugger to run alongside a bicycle. Instead of calming him down, it dramatically increased his strength and made an already difficult dog even harder to control.
At that point, Tugger was knocking over family members, including their young child, jumping aggressively, humping, tearing holes in clothing, and pulling so hard on walks that taking him out became nearly impossible.
The family had reached a breaking point.
This was no longer about improving manners. It was about whether they could realistically live with the dog they loved.
After speaking with a childhood friend who had trained her dog with Sean Rivera, the family decided a more immersive solution was necessary.
Because of the severity of the situation, they chose Absolute Canine’s board-and-train program, which they described as Tugger’s “boot camp.”
Tugger lived with Sean for approximately nine weeks, giving him the structure, consistency, and focused daily training he clearly needed.
During that time, Sean worked through foundational obedience skills, including heel, sit, down, place, and structured working behaviors. Progress was communicated consistently so the family remained connected to the process and understood how Tugger was developing.
When it was time for pickup, the process did not stop at simply returning a trained dog.
Sean made the entire family participate, personally walking them through the commands and showing them how to reinforce Tugger’s training correctly.
That owner education was critical.
Sean and Jayme also followed up with an in-home visit, allowing them to observe Tugger in his actual living environment and help the family apply the training in everyday life.
This created not just a trained dog, but a household that understood how to maintain the progress.
The transformation was dramatic.
When Tugger’s family first saw him after training, they felt like they were looking at an entirely different dog.
The same dog who had once been physically unmanageable was now calm, responsive, and able to reliably follow one-word commands.
The impact on family life was enormous.
For the first time, they could confidently take Tugger on vacation, including staying in a dog-friendly rental home without worrying about disruptive behavior.
Simple everyday moments became manageable instead of stressful. Unexpected guests no longer created chaos because commands like “down” and “place” gave the family practical control. Tugger’s enthusiasm and personality remained, but now existed within healthy boundaries.
Perhaps the most meaningful result was emotional.
What had once been a source of stress, tears, and frustration became exactly what the family had wanted from the beginning: a happy dog living successfully within a happy home
